Drying of bulk material can be a tricky and interesting process, simply because of the volume and number of material is larger. In order to provide an optimal drying process, it is important to understand the nature of the material to be dried. Some material may require gentle mechanical and thermal handling. One example of the material is bakery grist (blend of wheat or grains). This is a pre-processed dough-like-mass consist of coarsely ground cereals, intended for baking whole-meal bread. When entering the dryer, it is quite pasty and sticky. The dryer-cooler (figure 1) is expected to lower the moisture down to around 10%. The drying temperature must not exceed 50°C in order to preserve the nutritive value.

During extrusion, there will be some changes in physical, chemical, functional, and nutritional properties. Denaturation of protein is the most important attribute in changing the extrudate properties. According to Camire in Riaz (2000), protein changes during extrusion can be divided into functional and nutritional changes. Functionally, extrusion will reduce the solubility in water and diluted buffer also helps in texture forming of the extrudate. While nutritionally, extrusion will reduce lysine and improved digestibility.

0.8 mm shrimp feed pellet made by IDAH Pellet Mill. In the last 3 years, we are actively commencing trials on producing crumble feed substitutes by utilizing pellet die with 0.8 mm hole size. Trials in our customer site showed satisfactory results and they are already continuing to produce this small-size shrimp feed. Now, we are happy to officially introduce this pellet die to the market.

We are ready for the commissioning of the floating fish feed plant in Egypt. With the support of our customer and representative in Egypt, we have finished the installation of this feed extrusion plant with main machines including vertical pulverizer ZP-150, ContraTwin extruder EP-156DF, horizontal dryer CD-2508H, and rotary drum coater MR-1004.

What comes to your mind when you heard “starch gelatinization”? If you are working in the food or feed business, I believe you have ever heard this at least once. But have you ever heard of “starch cooking?

TVP technology has long been developed in Taiwan. With the increasing demand for a sustainable plant-based protein source, the development of a flexible but stable meat substitute production for the vegan population process has become a necessity. Our Twin Screw Extruder is designed with exact temperature control and adjustable screw to reform and re-structure the plant-based protein to generate protein fibers (fibration). This cooking extrusion process is important for the texture and mouthfeel of TVP and HMMA.

The production of high-quality shrimp (or prawn) feed is a series of complex and versatile processes. Shrimp feed pelleting is well known in Asia as the most economical way and it dominates the market. In China and India, the shrimp feed (for L. vannamei and P. monodon) market grew exponentially in these few years. Through this presentation, IDAH will guide you to the world of shrimp feed pelleting. In general making shrimp feed is influenced by good formulation and good processing, but the factory floorplan is also accountable for the shrimp feed quality.

Another successful commissioning of the fish feed plant in Indonesia. This fish feed plant utilizes the latest technology from IDAH. The main machines supplied include the hammer mill XHM-1400, extruder EP-218, horizontal dryer CDX-1250, and vacuum coater VC-2000. This production line is intended for production of 8 ton per hour floating fish feed with 3.0 mm hole size

IDAH engineering team has just finished the in-house commissioning of the co-rotating twin-screw extruder (Model: EP-50D). This extruder will be shipped to our customer in South Korea for the production of TVP. Using this extruder, our customer also planned to do some research regarding the High Moisture Meat Analogue (HMMA) in the future.

IDAH increased production capacity in extruder dies with new investments in Vertical Machining Center (VMC). “This new machine will share the production load of the existing machines and give us an extra edge in keeping up with our customers' demands,” the company said.

New Vertical Machining Center Along with the increase of our machine demand, this year we added another vertical machining center (VMC) with a bigger worktable. This machine can handle material with dimensions up to 1000 mm length, 600 mm width, and 450 mm height. The spindle can rotate up to 15,000 rpm while achieving precision up to 10 microns (0.01 mm). Extruder start-up waste can be reused! The BN-50H dryer is operated with a 3.7 kW drive motor. With two feeding doors, one exhaust pipe, and a manual slide gate. Steam-jacket the heater will help to dry 200-250 kg per batch of extrusion start-up material down to 10-12%. This machine opens up a new possibility to re-cycle the start-up material. Our customer in Indonesia recently bought this dryer to complete their existing extrusion system. Extrusion has been an important step in production. Sharing is caring- IDAH cares for your needs webinar for shrimp feed pelleting technology Through this two hours webinar, IDAH shared the 40 years' worth of knowledge in shrimp feed production to the diverse audience of how shrimp feed is produced in the Asia Pacific (APAC). In APAC, pelleted shrimp feed is the preferred process of shrimp feed due to shrimp's slow feeding habit and high palatability as the result of feed smell preservation. Aquafeed and pet food production lines incorporate many sifters in their process, whether in grinding, crumbling, or packing system. For example, the requirement of the material fineness after grinding may reach up to 80 to 100 mesh (177 to 149 microns). So not only do we need to have a sifter with good sieving efficiency, but also have a proven capability to be used in every system.

Small Pellets Does Matter Production of starter feed or shrimp feed can be considered as a form of art rather than science. Many producers are facing a hard time dealing with decisions for the best practice in manufacturing shrimp feed, especially small size pellets (1.0 to 1.2 mm)

IDAH production line for small feed always applied the pulverizer. In recent times, the presence of the IDAH ZP-series vertical pulverizer (no-screen type) has helped to boost the efficiency of the grinding process. With the same power consumption, the ZP series will produce a higher capacity than the conventional screen-type pulverizer. This pulverizer is equipped with a hydraulic operated top cover and safety switch for easier and safer spare parts replacement. Patented design for ground material separation and control material fineness. The hammer and liner are made with high-quality material, enforced with a tungsten carbide plate for long-lasting performance.

The new CDX-series horizontal dryer from IDAH. This dryer is designed with separate drying temperature zones. Each temperature zone is independently controlled for high efficient drying. With unique airflow from top and bottom, provides uniform drying throughout all material layers. This dryer uses a stainless steel-made drying tray for easy replacement and prevents material from sticking on the tray. If you are looking for a profit-generating dryer with good moisture control and uniformity, then this IDAH CDX-series dryer is the answer.

A new generation, developed for the shrimp feed industry, multi-deck carousel dryer/cooler is designed for better uniformity and optimum moisture control. This compact dryer-cooler has an advanced air system, utilizing the air from the cooler into the dryer air system, thus increases the overall efficiency, and reduces 50% of the exhaust air volume. The moisture control is performed on the finished cold product done by First-in-First-out (FIFO) product flow with a short overall retention time. Easy, quick, and accurate moisture control has a big impact on product quality and cost price.

IDAH Pellet mill produces shrimp pellets with 0.8 and 1.0 mm diameter to replace big-size-crumbled pellets. Producing small pellets will eliminate the need for a crumbling process that uses twice as much material as small size pelleting and in most of the time, generate unworkable dust.

Danny Chang General Manager of IDAH Co., Ltd., was honored invited to deliver a speech at FIGAP fair on Oct. 18, 2016, sharing his experience on new technology and equipment development to how to achieve optimum quality of shrimp feed. Started from 1974, more than 50% customers in China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Indonesia choose the Idah solution.

In a modern shrimp feed pelleting process increasingly more liquids are added into the mash feed. This in combination with long term steam conditioning is increasing gelatinization and water stability for a better end product quality. Recipe cost optimisation can be limited if there are drying capacity restrictions. In a lot of situations moisture removal with only cooling is not enough anymore and an extra drying step is required. Moisture control is more and more crucial for quality and cost price reasons.
